What is a Big Sit you might ask? Well, a Big Sit is kind of like a tailgate, but for birding instead of a sporting event. Traditionally, Big Sit's are twenty-four hour events, but the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin will be doing a mini 3-hour event instead.

A tally of all bird species seen from a 17-foot diameter circle will be kept. Attendees will be set up near a prairie area of the cemetery where the birding is often quite good. People are welcome to join us for some or all of the Big Sit or, feel free to just come say hi and then explore the rest of the cemetery, which is filled with incredible Milwaukee history and good birding throughout.

When you enter at the main entrance on Lincoln Avenue, you’ll see arrow signs that say “Event This Way” directing you to the "Mini" Big Sit.

What to expect: You can bring lawn chairs and have a relaxing morning looking at birds as we will be sitting on the lawn. There will be binoculars available as well as at least two spotting scopes. Rules will be explained at the event, but the best rule is that you are free to stay for the whole morning or to go explore if you wish. Be there at the beginning of the Big Sit or come when you want, whatever works for you.

This is a good event for anyone with limited mobility, as even the exploring can be done from paved roads—in or out of a vehicle. It is also great for anyone trying to get in their steps for the day as the cemetery is huge.

Bring snacks and beverages (non-alcoholic please) for yourself, or to share, and it will have that tailgate feel.
