Purple Martin Chick Banding with Dr. Medhavi Ambardar

  • Forest Beach Migratory Preserve 4970 Country Club Beach Road Port Washington, Wisconsin, 53074 United States (map)

A perched Purple Martin by Rita Flores Wiskowski.

Lakes Michigan Bird Observatory is inviting the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin to observe the process of banding Purple Martin chicks. There may be an opportunity for hands-on experience, but no guarantees. Bring a friend and a lawn chair!

Dr. Medhavi Ambardar, the Observatory's Chief Scientist, will be leading the banding process while sharing her wealth of knowledge with anyone that can join us. Medhavi has banded hundreds of birds across multiple species; her background in academia promises to make this experience both fascinating and educational!

For event questions, please email Medhavi at mambardar@lmbo.org.

What to Expect and Accessibility

We love new birders! As always, birders of all skill levels and ages are welcome!

  • We have child- and adult-sized binoculars available for those who’d like to borrow a pair!

  • The martin colony is adjacent to the parking lot near the pond.

  • Since our events are public spaces, it is possible that you may appear in photos. Please notify someone on our team if you prefer not to have your photo taken at an event.

For event questions, please email Medhavi at mambardar@lmbo.org.
